How to Track Your Visitors

Tracking the amount of visitors to your website might seem like a task for a website developer, but this isn’t necessarily the case. There are a multitude of ways you can track your website visitors even without much technical knowledge or experience.

Throughout this article we’ll teach you exactly how and why you should track your website visitors.

Why Tracking Your Visitors Is Important

Tracking your visitors is one of the absolute best things that you could do for your site. If you don’t know the performance metrics of your website, how else are you going to improve it? Here are some of the primary benefits:

  • Increase Revenue – you’ll be able to do this easily by seeing exactly which visitors are purchasing from you and exactly where they’re coming from.
  • Improve Engagement – you can see which visitors are engaging with your site and which visitors are just looking at the first page. This will be very valuable when it comes to improving your website.
  • Better Optimization – you’ll be able to do a lot more with your site now that you understand where your visitors are coming from. This is not just their country, but also how they’re finding you, what browser and OS they’re using, and so much more.

How You Can Do This

There is a wide range of analytics software available, some are free to use whereas others are premium. For the sake of simplicity, we are going to use Google Analytics for our example as it’s from Google and is arguably the most tried and trusted analytics software.

To get started, go to the Google Analytics website ( and sign in using the navigation panel at the top. You will then have the option to install Google Analytics on your website using various different methods, specific instructions are available during the installation.

If your website is on Wordpress then there is an even easier option, you can install the Google Analytics plugin (as well as many others) directly from the Wordpress plugin directory.

Something to Keep in Mind

Even though the majority of analytics software is fairly accurate, is shouldn’t be taken as an absolute, you should always look at the data with a grain of salt. With that being said, analytics software such as the ones described above can provide a valuable insight into the performance of your website and clearly has many benefits.

When incorporating tracking software onto your website you may need to change some of your website’s legal documentation, such as your privacy policy.
